trüAthlete Fund formed to help National team athletes
Toronto, ON, Canada. Victoria, BC, Canada March 15, 2012 — The Canadian Rugby Foundation together with trü performance Nutrition is pleased to announce the trüAthlete Fund developed in support of the National Senior Women’s Program.
The trüAthlete Fund has been formed to help National team players who have demonstrated through their commitment to training, skill development, competition, and promotion of rugby at the grassroots level that they fully embody the term “trüAthlete”. The Fund aims to reward the dedication exemplified by these “trüAthlete’s” by filling any gaps in funding that the athletes may face throughout their international rugby careers. The Fund hopes to demonstrate to our athletes that their commitment to the sport and the National program has not gone unnoticed by the rugby community and sports fans alike.
Bryan Marshall, of trü Performance Nutrition, is excited to have established the trüAthlete Fund in support of the National team athletes. “I’m very fortunate to work with elite athletes on a daily basis, and I am aware of the devotion and sacrifice it takes to reach the national team level. With the effort and work that these young women put into their training, lack of funding should not prevent any athlete from competing at an international level.”
Chairman of the Canadian Rugby Foundation, Mike Holmes, is fully supportive of the new fund and is committed to helping it grow: “The Canadian Rugby Foundation is pleased to support the new initiative to help with the costs that often hinder the development of deserving female rugby players. This is the first endowed fund designed to help with women’s rugby and the Foundation is committed to match funds raised 1 dollar for every 4 dollars raised to make this endeavor successful”
Megan Gibbs, a 9 year veteran of the Senior Program who understands the financial strain of competing at the international level, expressed her excitement for the Fund. “A Fund dedicated solely to the women is critical in the sustainable development of the game. The leaps and bouds we’ve made with the National women’s sevens through the support of Rugby Canada and Own the Podium has been incredible. But a Fund that could provide additional resources to our women and help mitigate further financial constraints is very encouraging. It is very exciting”.
