The Dennis Crawford Memorial Scholarship Award Fund is dedicated to raising money for an academic scholarship to be awarded annually to a young athlete or athletes pursuing post-secondary education. In partnership with Westshore RFC, recipients of the award will have the opportunity to participate in a specialized training program to enhance their skills to become specialists at the front row position(s) in the sport of rugby. In addition to their on-field support, the scholarship will provide these student-athletes with financial assistance to support their off-field studies at college, university, or trade school.
The award is named in honour of Dennis Crawford who was a long-standing member of Westshore RFC and who played for the club for over four decades while it was known as the Velox-Valhallians RFC. Dennis was a formidable loose-head prop who was respected by his opponents and teammates alike, both on and off the pitch. In his later years, Dennis was passionate about mentoring young players, front-row players in particular. He was known as a hard and dedicated worker who still managed to find time to volunteer countless hours coaching young athletes. With his sharp trade skills, Dennis was one of many volunteers who were instrumental in building the former rugby clubhouse on Gordon Head Road. Dennis Crawford passed away in the fall of 2020, still an active rugby player.
