IRB’s “A Beginner’s Guide to Rugby Union”

The Canadian Rugby Foundation has received numerous emails requesting more information on the game of rugby and a better understanding of the laws.  This interest is most definately the result of Canada’s recent performance against Tonga at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Attached is a link to the International Rugby Board’s “A Beginner’s Guide to Rugby Union” which is a 16 page document outlining a basic overview of the game.

2011 Courtenay Taaffe Memorial Scholarship Winner

The Canadian Rugby Foundation and the Taaffe family are pleased to announce Lauren Nutt as this year’s recipient. Lauren is from Victoria, BC and was coached by Courtenay while at Stelly’s High School where she learned firsthand how passionate Courtney was for rugby and the community. Lauren now lives to those standards in memory of Courtenay.Continue reading

Capping Presentation at RWC Vancouver Dinner

IMG_0255 copy group resizeDuring a Rugby World Cup send-off dinner in Vancouver on Thursday, current and former Canadian internationals Hubert Buydens, Jamie Cudmore, Luke Cudmore, John Hutchinson, Danny Nikas and Jim Yagenegi were presented their caps from their test debuts.

The practice is an initiative of Rugby Canada and the Canadian Rugby Foundation, as both organizations work to award all players who were capped for Canada with their official cap.Continue reading

Rugby Sevens Given the Nod

The Toronto District School Board is welcoming a new sanctioned sport to its athletics fold.

Voting members of Toronto’s 86 public high schools officially approved rugby sevens in June.

The results, 89 percent in favour, have pleased Don Mills Collegiate’s Daniel Kunanec who has been championing on behalf of 1,091 student rugby players.Continue reading

CRF Raises $100,000 for Olympic Rugby Sevens Development

Hong Kong has proved to be a successful sevens tour stop for Canadian rugby in more ways than one. Not only did the Canadian women win the championship and the men take home the Bowl, but the Canadian Rugby Foundation has bolstered support with $100,000 raised for an endowment fund. For all these reasons, CRF’s Matthuw Ronald-Jones celebrated the weekend as one of great success in the Canadian rugby sevens annals. “I would say it’s one of the best weekends,” Ronald-Jones said. “The men defended their bowl title and the women won the competition. The teams have done a great job of garnering support.”Continue reading
