The first 7 berths will be the top two teams from BC, the top two teams from Ontario, the RSEQ champion, the Prairie champion, and the Atlantic champion. The 8th berth will be decided each year based on the following:

Thus for 2022, the 8 berths will be:
- the top two teams from BC;
- the top two teams from Ontario;
- the RSEQ champion;
- the Prairie champion;
- the Atlantic champion; and
- the winner of the wild-card match between BC #3 and Quebec #2 teams
The play-in format will be reconsidered when a university with only one berth finishes higher than a team at the CUMRC that earned their berth through a play-in.
