At his grad ceremony on Friday night, Storm Fisher was presented with the Courtney Walls Scholarship, a $1,000 contribution to the costs of his post-secondary interests. Only two other local athletes, Sam Overton (OKM) and Joel Henseleit (KSS), have received the award since its introduction to the Okanagan eight years ago. To qualify, the athlete must exemplify three aspects of Courtney’s character – (a) a good student, (b) a leader respected by his teammates and coaches, and (c) a quality rugby player.
In addition to demonstrating all those characteristics, Storm also clearly loves the sport. He could be seen every Sunday during mini-rugby season, providing his rugby knowledge to 8 and 9 year old touch rugby players. He also intends to continue playing the sport.
The award has special meaning for Storm. “My mom used to know Courtney quite well from Kelowna and UVic. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing many stories about him, which makes this award so much more impactful.”
Storm was also one of seven local rugby players awarded $500 CORE Rugby Bursaries this year. These bursaries and the Courtney Walls award are funded by the CORE Endowment Fund, donated by 40 ‘Founding Members’, local rugby enthusiasts who collectively contributed more than $100,000 to a fund that will support bursaries for local graduating rugby players forever.
